Colonial Fireworks

EIGHTEENTH CENTURY FIREWORKS! This image on the left looks like a rare botanical specimen. However, it is actually an 18th century roman candle disguised as a potted plant. It is one of the more interesting images included in a 1780 manual on the fabrication of pyrotechnical instruments and the construction of fireworks. This Dutch manuscript, entirely handwritten and illustrated, provides clear instructions on how to build your own fireworks spectacular. The entire 376 manuscript is from the Getty Research Library. Also pictured is the title page of this anonymous fireworks manual.
