Tobacco Tuesday Cigars

TAVERN TOBACCO TUESDAY – CIGARS: Late in the 18th century, cigars were introduced.  Samuel Fraunces had 2,500 “Segar’s” among the stock of his Philadelphia tavern in 1795.  New York officials also enjoyed cigars at the conclusion of two dinners held at the City Tavern in 1798; on one occasion, the group of 28 men smoked almost 200 of them. Information: Kym Rice, “Early American Taverns: For the Entertainment of Friends and Strangers.” Pictured is an early 1800s cigar smoking scene.
