  Tour the Oldest Section of the Tavern

18th-century lifestyles become a sensory experience where one engages the past through interactive tours providing everlasting memories.

     Historic Michie Tavern, established in 1784 by Scotsman William Michie, served as the social center of its community and accommodated travelers with food, drink and lodging. In 1927, the Tavern was moved 17 miles to its present location close to Monticello, serving as a prime example of the Colonial Revival period.

     Our interactive tour highlights Gaming which serves as an interpretive tool to explore 18th-century tavern life, social history and customs.  The tours are educational, fun and appropriate for adults and youth alike.  History unfolds as each room reveals the lifestyles and customs of 18th-century patrons.

     During the tour, you will be invited to play Shut the Box, a favorite game played by sailors, or the Alphabet Game which creates an engaging group activity.  Other forms of gaming and entertainment will be discussed throughout your tour.  Have you ever danced a "Colonial Reel"?

Youth adventurers hone their skills of discovery by participating in Michie Tavern's Treasure Hunt.  Unravel the clues and a bag of (chocolate) gold coins reward successful explorers.  Youth may also don period apparel or play 18th-century games.
