Charlottesville Business Hall Of Fame

Michie Tavern is honored to announce Mrs. Josephine Henderson was inducted into the Daily Progress Greater Charlottesville Business Hall of Fame on June 13. Mrs. Henderson was literally and figuratively a “mover and shaker” of the Charlottesville-Albemarle community.  After purchasing Michie Tavern, she had the structure moved 17 miles by horse and wagon and by truck to Route 53 the Thomas Jefferson Parkway.  She opened the Tavern as a museum in 1928 and it has been operating as such, since that time. “She probably didn’t know it when she relocated Michie Tavern in 1927, but Josephine Henderson was not only an entrepreneur, but a preservationist and tourism trade pioneer who successfully blended capitalism with history,” Daily Progress Business Editor, Bryan McKenzie said. Out of the eight persons recognized, Mrs. Henderson was the only woman in the group. The Daily Progress, championed by The Charlottesville Regional Chamber of Commerce and supported by many notable businesses are committed to recognize community leaders for the next decade. Pictured is Mrs. Henderson during the time she moved Michie Tavern.  The inset is a photograph of Mrs. Henderson in later years.
